Dear friends,
It is our pleasure to welcome your call for World Road Transport Action Week 2008 (13-19 October) in protest against the condition of the workers employed in this sector, with its “particular focus on the continued oppression of the independent workers' movement in Iran, including the unjust imprisonment of Mansour Osanloo, the President of the Tehran Bus Workers’ Union.”
The international support by progressive organizations such as your own that the Iranian workers, as well as the Iranian people at large, have received from different parts of the world has so far functioned as a significant prop for them in their struggles against the Islamic regime. Workers International Solidarity Committee (WISC), would like to thank you wholeheartedly for your previous efforts in that direction, and for your present call for international solidarity with workers in Iran. At the same time, WISC is delighted to let you know that it is standing on your side in your current international action as an important endeavor to bring about immediate improvement in the conditions of the workers employed in inland transport section worldwide. WISC will, therefore, participate with pleasure in your rallies, protests and other events with everything in its power. It will, further, call on all workers and freedom loving people in Iran and across the world to join your global campaign.

All sections of the Iranian society are currently involved in protest and struggle. There are certain common demands that unite these protests and struggles. As you know, workers are deprived of the most basic rights to the freedoms such as association and strike; over a million workers are grappling with the problem of their unpaid wages; eighty percent of workers are contract workers, some of whom have to enter into even blank contracts locally called “unsigned” contracts; labour activists, workers’ leaders, and all other rights activists are constantly and relentlessly persecuted; and so on, and so forth. Under such circumstances the Iranian workers, and the people of Iran, in general, are, more than ever, in need of the support of the international working-class as well as freedom loving individuals. This your latest action is, no doubt, a significant step towards strengthening the protest movement of the Iranian people, in general, and that of the Iranian workers, in particular. We, therefore, welcome your international action in solidarity with the Iranian workers and will do everything in our power to support it. It is, in our view, in the same direction that we put forward the following specific demands:
1- immediate and unconditional release of Mansour Osanloo along with all other political prisoners;
2- the expulsion of the regime of Islamic Republic of Iran from ILO and all other international bodies;
3- all forms of pressure, persecution and threat against workers, teachers and women’s activists, as well as all leaders of protest movements of various sections of the society to cease immediately, and all the cases made up against them by the Ministry of Intelligence be declared null and void;
4- the right to freedoms of association, strike, expression, assembly and demonstration are considered by us as the most basic, inalienable rights of the workers, as well as the people at large, which must be imposed on the Islamic regime.
